The New Zealand Government has declared amendments to the rates of New Zealand Superannuation (NZ Super) and Veteran’s Pension, with the alterations being in effect from 1 April 2025. The changes are intended to aid in supporting retirees to cope with living expenses during the economic upheavals.
Updated Payment Rates for NZ Superannuation – 2025
From 1 April 2025, the fortnightly payment rates (net of taxation, M tax code) shall be:
- Single Living Alone: $1,083.56 (from $1,042.12).
- Single Sharing Accommodation: $997.92 (up from $958.32).
- Couples, both eligible: $1,110.12 (from $1,071.78).
- Couples, one partner eligible: $857.12 (increase from $823.54 for the partner eligible).
- This modification is intended to reflect the government’s intentions to keep pension rates in line with inflation and wage growth.
Payment Period for 2025
NZ Super payments are made each fortnight on Tuesdays. Although specific dates for the entire year are usually provided by Work and Income NZ, one should consult this organization for accurate and up-to-date information.
Eligibility
In order to be eligible for NZ Super, applicants must meet the following criteria: be at least 65 years of age; be a citizen or permanent resident of New Zealand; have lived in New Zealand for at least 10 years since the age of 20, including at least 5 years of residency after the age of 50.
These criteria allow support for people who have contributed to New Zealand’s economy before their retirement.
Incidental Support
In some cases, supplementary assistance can be provided to pensioners in addition to expected NZ Super payments.
- Accommodation Supplement is a program aimed at housing costs, with rates set depending on location and an individuals’ circumstances.
- Disability Allowance offers payment up to $77.50 weekly for people with ongoing health problems causing added costs in their lives.
- Community Services Card provides access to less expensive healthcare services and prescriptions.
- All programs work towards providing insight into client needs in support.
Looking Ahead
While eligibility at 65 remains for today, the government has announced a gradual lifting of this to 67 by 2040 for those born after June 1972. There will always be sufficient time for possible retirees of the future to plan around this change.
