On March 31, 2025, the official announcement of this increase from the South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) with effect from April 2025 is about the Child Support Grant. This financial provision will augment services for needy families to reflect the government’s interest in social welfare.
Official Publication of the Increased Grant
Also, in the revised Budget Speech of 12 March, the Finance Minister, Enoch Godongwana, confirmed that the grants will be increased for the year 2025. The Child Support Grant will increase by R30, thus increasing from R530 to R560 monthly, effective in April 2025.
Current Grant Amount and Proposed Increase
Before the increase, the Child Support Grant was R530 per child per month, which is an increase of 5.7%, meaning the government has a push towards transferring social grants based on inflation and rising costs of living.
Effective Date for Increase
New grant amount of R560 per child will take effect from April 2025. Beneficiaries will thus receive their increased payments as scheduled that month.
March 2025 Payment schedule
In March 2025, beneficiaries will continue to receive the existing grant amount of R530 per child. Payments will be made during the month on these days:
Older Person Grants will be paid on March 23, 2025. Disability Grants will be paid on March 25, 2025. Children Grant will be paid on March 26, 2025. These dates are according to the SASSA standard pay schedule.
Eligibility Criteria for the Child Support Grant
There are specific conditions under which an applicant qualifies for the Child Support Grant. By definition, the applicant is a South African citizen, permanent residents, or recognized refugees. He should be the main caregiver of the child, who must be below 18 years of age.
In turn, income ceilings apply. A single parent should earn less than R5,000 a month, while a married couple should have a combined monthly income of below R10,000. This means that poverty-stricken families receive assistance from the grants.
Application Process for New Applicants
The following are the steps for new applicants to apply for the Child Support Grant:
First, go to your nearest SASSA office and collect the application’s form. Collect all other required documents in addition to your valid ID, proof of residence, child’s birth certificate, and proof of income where applicable. Submit the completed form with all necessary documents to your local SASSA office. Expect to be notified by SASSA regarding the application status. Time before processing will differ, so applicants are strongly encouraged to apply early.
Grant Increase Impact on Beneficiaries
From this grant, Child Support Allotment expects to gain a lot. It will help fulfill most of the essential needs for children and direct resources toward nutrition, prevention and treatment of diseases, and education. Finally, it reduces an already overburdened family income into a much-needed pittance for low-income families. The adjustment reiterates the government’s commitment to supporting vulnerable populations and improving social well-being.
